Sense of humor failure? Trump PULLS OUT of White House Correspondents' Dinner in shocking break with tradition - as his war with the media heats up
- Donald Trump won't be attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner
- He did not cancel the event completely, and hopes people 'have a great evening!'
- The dinner is currently planned for April 29, 2017
President Donald Trump has announced that he will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner this year in a shocking break with tradition.
'I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!' Trump tweeted on Saturday afternoon.
His announcement comes amid growing tensions between his administration and media outlets.
The annual dinner, which is scheduled for April 29, generally includes a comedian roast and a humorous address from the president.
Trump has been skewered at the event in the past and was targeted by former president Barack Obama during his address at the 2016 event.
Obama took aim at Trump, who was then a candidate, saying: 'I'm a little hurt that he's not here tonight. It's surprising. You got a room full of reporters, celebrities, cameras, and he says no.'
President Trump appears to be breaking tradition in his announcement, as the White House Correspondents' dinner takes place at the home of the President, and it is customary that the person in that position attends with their families.
The White House Correspondents' Association is an organization of journalists whose job it is to cover the acting president.
The yearly dinner has become somewhat of a Washington tradition, as it was started in 1920. It is traditionally held on the last Saturday of April every year at the Washington Hilton.
The Dinner is held as a scholarship benefit, raising money for gifted students in college journalism programs.
